The Valleys Regional Park
Parc Rhanbarthol y Cymoedd
The project included actions to stimulate the involvement of the private sector, visitors and local communities to encourage and support responsible and sustainable use of the natural environment for mutual benefit. Specifically there were four aims, each with with a specific work plan (aka Work Package)
1. Assess the economic potential of the environment
2. Engage the private sector
3. Pilot visitor payback schemes
4. Enhance community enterprise and engagement
WECAN (WORKING TOGETHER FOR ECONOMICALLY PROSPEROUS COMMUNITIES THROUGH ASSETS OF NATURAL HERITAGE) was an Interreg IVB-funded project.
The territories involved in the WECAN project are located in post-industrial, densely populated regions. They have all suffered a massive decline in heavy industry, more specifically the closure of coalmines and related activities. Today, these regions are experiencing high levels of economic inactivity and often suffer with problems of social exclusion.
The primary aim of WECAN was to understand hoiw we might maximise the potential of the environment as a socio-economic driver for sustainable regeneration in the partners’ regions including the south Wales valleys.
