EBBW FACH TRAIL

PROJECT AREA

 

The Ebbw Fach Trail links together, through walking and cycling routes, 13 green spaces along the valley offering a great variety of countryside and heritage sites from Beaufort Hill Woodlands, near Brynmawr in the north to Llanhilleth in the south - a total of almost 16 kilometres. Along the route are three local nature reserves with wonderful walks and wildlife, the historic roundhouses built by Crawshay Bailey and a whole host of hidden gems waiting to be discovered, whilst taking in some fantastic views.

A strategic project creating a trail from Brynmawr to Aberbeeg including 5km of new access route, general landscape improvements and installation of facilities for visitors.

Project Description

 

The series of works within this project have been written up into a detailed strategy/masterplan with the assistance of the Ebbw Fach Trail Group.

 

They will include improvements to unsafe structures, clearing ditches, providing viewing platforms, fishing platforms, stabilisation of banks, landscaping works, picnic areas, information and interpretation signage, pedestrian crossings, trail markers, seating, car parking, control of invasive weeds, improving access including DDA, bridges, dog bins, and litter bins.

 

Proposed outputs

 

3,175 ha of land improved;

13+ community groups assisted;
 

500 additional visitors;

5 km of access route created;

10 qualifications gained.

 

Good practice

 

Build and strengthen relationships between BGCBC and the Ebbw Fach Trail Group.

 

Promote health benefits, open space and biodiversity bilingually.  

 

Ensure DDA compliant works and equal opportunity policies are taken on board.  

 

Relationships with the community will be built upon and they will be engaged in the project from the outset.  

 

Recycled/reused/sustainable materials to be used where possible.

 

Timescale

 

Commencing September 2009 with completion by March 2012.
